OUR HISTORY

The One Voice Community Development Program, Inc. was founded in 2017 by Ms. Davida Potts.  Ms. Potts is a former resident of the D.C. Metropolitan area, namely Prince Georges County.  She moved to Baltimore County, Maryland in 2015 and eight months later, decided that Baltimore City would be a good place to settle in.  Becoming a single mother at the age of 19— one year after dropping out of college at Morgan State University— she began the difficult task of raising her son without his father.  At twenty-one, she landed a job working with the U.S. government, working six days a week. This allowed her to buy her first home and to be a stable provider for her then, only child. But there was a price to pay– she spent more time working than with her son.

“The only support I had at the time was my mother,” Ms. Potts said when asked who helped her during those trying times. Mrs. Antoinette Melodia Brown, Davida’s mother, cared for her grandson when her daughter was working. But at the same time, she instilled a sense of responsibility in Davida by not taking on the role of ‘mother’ herself.  Mrs. Brown encouraged her daughter to embrace her child, to nurture him and to live life by setting a good example.  Never one to forget those who loved and influenced her along the way, Ms. Potts founded the One Voice Community Development Program, Inc. in honor of  her mother, Mrs. Brown, who died in 2013, having survived 16 years after her initial diagnosis with breast cancer and ten years after its return in 2003.
